2011 China (Xiamen) LED Indoor Lighting Industry Technology Development Forum Held

  On April 8, 2011, sponsored by the Xiamen Municipal People's Government, guided by units such as the Fujian Provincial Information Bureau, and specifically implemented by the Provincial Optoelectronics Association, the 2011 China (Xiamen) LED Indoor Lighting Industry Technology Development Forum was grandly held at the Xiamen International Convention and Exhibition Center. Government leaders including Cao Jianlin, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Ye Chonggeng, Vice Mayor of Xiamen, as well as renowned figures from the LED industry at home and abroad, executives of leading enterprises, and outstanding senior technical engineers—including Li Jinmin, Director of the Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Zheng Fuxiong, Vice Chairman of the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Industry Association; Bi Jianwen, Asia-Pacific President of GE Lighting; Mou Tongsheng, Leader of the IEC International Standards Project Group; Ruan Jun, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Semiconductor Lighting Industry Alliance; and Wu Enbo, Vice President of the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute—attended the forum. Currently, China has become an important global LED device packaging base and the world's largest producer and exporter of LED displays, solar LEDs, landscape lighting, etc. This forum attracted numerous representatives including experts and scholars from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, as well as representatives from finance, enterprises, users, and intermediary organizations related to the domestic LED indoor lighting industry.


Forum Venue


  Cao Jianlin highly praised Xiamen for consistently adhering to technological innovation over the years, leading the optoelectronics and semiconductor lighting industries to achieve rapid development. At the meeting, several industry guests represented by Li Jinmin and Mou Tongsheng highly affirmed the advantages and bright development prospects of LED in the field of indoor lighting. Experts believe that in today's society, people are increasingly paying attention to their own health, especially the impact of environmental factors on human health. As for lighting sources, various kinds of light pollution have already affected human health. With its characteristics of no flicker, no ultraviolet radiation, no electromagnetic radiation, and low thermal radiation, LED becomes a truly healthy light source. At the same time, LED has the advantages of multi-color and intelligence, making it very suitable for the needs of indoor lighting, and is well-deserving of being called a "treasure" in the field of indoor lighting. Industry guests focused closely on the theme of LED indoor lighting, which is about to see great development globally, and conducted in-depth discussions on issues involved in LED's entry into the indoor lighting field, including price, lifespan, standards, stability, comfort, and safety. At the same time, the meeting summarized and analyzed the characteristics of the semiconductor lighting industry chain as well as the current trends in the development of China's semiconductor lighting industry. In response to the opportunities and challenges facing industry development, it proposed the development goals and development strategies for the semiconductor lighting industry during the "12th Five-Year Plan" period, jointly envisioning the bright future of the LED lighting industry.


  Director Li Jinmin introduced the latest progress China has made in the field of semiconductor lighting. According to reports, China has achieved significant progress in key equipment with independent intellectual property rights such as MOCVD and HVPE, as well as in LED devices such as deep ultraviolet LEDs. Blue LED chips manufactured using domestic MOCVD equipment have achieved a luminous power of 8.3mW at a driving current of 20mA, reaching the international advanced level. The domestically designed 48-wafer MOCVD machine from the Institute of Semiconductors of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has completed assembly and entered the equipment debugging stage. HVPE equipment may become the core equipment for future semiconductor lighting and is currently being actively developed.


  In addition, the Institute of Semiconductors of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has achieved significant progress in deep ultraviolet LEDs, vertical-structure LED chips, and nano-patterned substrates. Particularly in the field of deep ultraviolet LEDs, they can be applied not only in the lighting field but also have great development potential in the biological field. The use of deep ultraviolet LEDs achieves a bacteria killing rate of over 90%. However, Director Li also mentioned that China still faces many problems and challenges in key areas of LED lighting: insufficient R&D investment, scattered efforts, inability to share resources, and prominent low-level construction, among others.


  Professor Mou Tongsheng believes that for lighting sources, various forms of light pollution have already affected human health. As an LED features no flicker, no ultraviolet radiation, no electromagnetic wave radiation, and low thermal radiation, it has become a truly healthy light source. At the same time, LEDs offer the advantages of multiple colors and intelligence, enabling lighting applications in different environments and being very suitable for indoor lighting needs.


  Ruan Jun, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Semiconductor Lighting Industry Alliance, pointed out that in 2010, the overall scale of China's LED industry had reached 120 billion yuan, and will continue to grow at a compound growth rate of over 30% in the next five years. It is expected that by 2015, the scale of China's LED industry will reach 500 billion yuan. However, at present, China's LED enterprises are small in scale and scattered, and the industry is large but not strong. Therefore, it is necessary to make overall planning and coordination at the national level and increase investment in key areas to cope with competition from international sources.


  Wang Xiwei from Epistar Taiwan shared his views on the development trends of LEDs in the backlighting and general lighting fields. He believes that LED manufacturers have accumulated considerable experience in how to improve performance and reduce costs during the process of LEDs penetrating the backlighting field. With the arrival of the solid-state lighting era, the challenge for LEDs lies not only in lm/W (luminous efficacy), but also in lm/$ (cost). When the cost reaches 500 lm/$, it will trigger explosive growth in LED lighting. Based on the current investment and technological development of the LED industry, this time point is expected to be achieved between 2012 and 2013.
