Nighttime Fluorescent Bike Lane Unveiled: Glows for 8 Hours After 30 Minutes of Light Exposure
According to the tech website New Atlas, in order to improve nighttime safety for pedestrians and cyclists, an innovative Polish materials company has created a glowing bike lane that flickers at night; while improving travel safety, it also presents a unique road landscape.
Two years ago, in order to make roads more colorful and vibrant, Studio Roosegaarde took the lead in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and created a "fluorescent" bike lane that flickers at night. Inspired by Studio Roosegaarde, a materials technology center in the northern Polish city of Lidzbark Warminski also decided to follow suit and built Poland's first fluorescent bike lane.
It is reported that this materials technology center is named TPAQI (TPA Gesellschaft für Qualit?tssicherung und Innovation) and specializes in innovative materials. TPAQI learned about Studio Roosegaarde's idea at a local road forum, so they also developed the idea of creating another fluorescent road to present a pleasing road landscape.
TPAQI's research work began a year ago. The laboratory conducted a variety of tests to determine how to produce the best fluorescent effect. The staff tested a range of materials and colors. Their goal was not only to create a brilliant color effect, but also for the fluorescent road to further protect the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.
Ultimately, the researchers discovered a fine aggregate containing inorganic luminophores that could produce the best results. This phosphorescent material can be "charged" by sunlight during the day and emits a blue glow at night, illuminating the road. It is reported that Poland took the lead in building a 100-meter test road, laying a layer of fluorescent material on the asphalt road. Of course, in order to ensure safety, an additional layer of fine sandstone was added on top of the fluorescent material to increase friction.
TPAQI stated that 30 to 60 minutes of sunlight is enough to make the fluorescent road glow for 8 hours at night. Moreover, the luminous performance of this material can last for as long as 20 years. As part of the experiment, the persistence of the new material's fluorescent glow under real road conditions was also a target of investigation. It is understood that the fluorescent road was completed at the end of September this year.
