On June 29, the China PV LED Lighting Application Forum, hosted by Shenzhen Jiawei PV Lighting Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Jiawei Shares), was grandly convened at the Golden Hall of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Dialogue Session of the China PV LED Lighting Application Forum

The forum attracted great attention from the industry because it focused on the development prospects of two major strategic emerging industries, PV and LED lighting. More than 300 well-known industry experts and professors, architects, lighting designers, interior designers, owners, and numerous lighting practitioners jointly discussed the trends and directions of the PV LED lighting industry.

The "Perfect Match" combination — vast prospects for market development. Both photovoltaic and LED are strategically emerging new energy industries that have received priority support during the national 12th Five-Year Plan period, and they have attracted significant attention and high expectations from all sectors of society. However, photovoltaic and LED belong to two different industrial sectors, sharing both commonalities and differences. How should these two industries complement each other's strengths going forward and open up new application markets? At the China Photovoltaic LED Lighting Application Conference, Professor Ding Kongxian, Chairman of Shenzhen Jiawei Photovoltaic Lighting Co., Ltd., provided the answer. He delivered an in-depth analysis of the rise, current status, and outlook of photovoltaic lighting.

As a pioneer of China's photovoltaic lighting industry, Ding Kongxian pointed out that the rise of the photovoltaic lighting industry in China is the result of the combination of technology, policy, and market. Its rise began with solar garden lights and solar lawn lights. It has improved people's lives and therefore generated enormous market demand. Currently, market production has grown from several million units per year ten years ago to nearly 600 million units per year today, while prices have dropped from $40–50 per unit more than a decade ago to $5 per unit now. This industry is currently the most successful, and is also a fully market-oriented new energy and new light source (LED) industry that operates without government subsidies.

He also believes that PV+LED is an advantageous combination, referred to in the industry as a "perfect match." Photovoltaic power generation is no longer prohibitively expensive, and the cost of grid-connected generation has already approached that of thermal power. Meanwhile, LED lighting — in terms of luminous efficacy, energy efficiency, and environmental friendliness — has clearly demonstrated its advantages and is undoubtedly the mainstream light source of the future. The perfect combination of the two has given rise to a domestic market scale of at least several hundred billion yuan, with very bright prospects.

The LED Lighting Application Forum, hosted by Professor Mao Sheng — Lifetime Researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Director of the Clean Energy Engineering Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, and member of the Solid-State Lighting Technology Committee of the U.S. Department of Energy — brought the on-site atmosphere to a climax. Ten government leaders, industry experts, renowned designers, and owner representatives directly addressed core issues in LED lighting application on-site: How do we define a product that truly meets lighting quality standards? What constitutes a true white light source? Should LEDs sacrifice part of their luminous efficacy to address the insufficient red-band spectrum in most LEDs on the current market... The forum was extraordinarily lively.

The high-end forum was attended by CAS Academician Chen Hesheng; Wu Ling, Secretary-General of the National Semiconductor Lighting Engineering R&D and Industry Alliance; Wang Jinsui, Honorary Chairman of the China Illuminating Engineering Society; Xu Huai, Chairman of the China Illuminating Engineering Society; Lv Fang, Deputy Director of the Project Management Office for China's Gradual Phase-out of Incandescent Lamps and Accelerated Promotion of Energy-saving Lamps under the National Development and Reform Commission; Professor Zhang Shaogang and Professor Xiao Huiqian of the China Academy of Building Research; Professor Ren Yuanhui of the China Academy of Aerospace Industry; Professor Ye Guanrong of the College of Information Engineering, Zhejiang University; Professor Xiao Hongqing of National Taiwan University of Science and Technology; Yu Anqi, Deputy Director of the National Electric Light Source Quality Supervision and Inspection Center (Shanghai); Professor Wang Gang of the Research Institute of Semiconductors, Sun Yat-sen University; Li Zili, Director of Guangdong Institute of Product Quality Supervision and Inspection; as well as leaders of industry associations and well-known lighting designers.

Wu Ling, Secretary-General of the National Semiconductor Lighting Engineering R&D and Industry Alliance, pointed out at the forum that LED lighting has entered an unprecedented period of development opportunities. On the basis of strengthening product R&D technology, expanding the LED lighting application market is undoubtedly the trend of the times.

According to Li Li, President of Shenzhen Jiawei Photovoltaic Lighting Co., Ltd., the China Photovoltaic LED Lighting Application Forum is expected to be held once a year from now on, building a good communication platform for the entire industry to jointly discuss major industry development issues, and is committed to promoting the healthy and sustainable development of China's photovoltaic lighting and LED lighting undertakings.

After the initial and entrepreneurial stages of ultra-high brightness LED lighting, by the end of the national "11th Five-Year Plan," the LED lighting industry had begun to take shape and entered a period of rapid development. In 2010, the number of enterprises and institutions engaged in the LED lighting industry in China exceeded 3,000, with an annual output value reaching 120 billion yuan and a growth rate of 45%, of which chips accounted for 5 billion yuan, packaging devices 25 billion yuan, and applications 90 billion yuan. Authoritative experts believe that within the next five years, the average annual growth rate of LED lighting will exceed 35%, and by 2015, the industry's output value is expected to reach 500 billion yuan RMB, equivalent to twice the total output value of the traditional lighting market in 2010 (approximately 250 billion yuan).

Another clear direction is that the focus of LED lighting applications is further shifting from outdoor lighting to indoor lighting, which will dominate the LED lighting market over the next five years. While many variables exist in the competitive landscape of LED lighting applications, enterprises with advantages in capital, scale, technology, brand, and market channels will become the main force in industry consolidation.
