Over 33,000 LED bulbs create APEC logo using "interior light transmission" for energy efficiency and environmental protection

APEC "Auspicious Water" pattern released

The 2014 APEC meeting will be held in Beijing from November 5 to 11. The Office of the Capital City Environmental Construction Committee (abbreviated as "Shouhuan Office") recently officially released the "Auspicious Water" pattern as the core graphic.

The "Auspicious Water" pattern has been applied in environmental arrangements. Wu Yamei, deputy director of the Municipal Administration Committee, introduced yesterday that at the south end of the Olympic Ethnic Avenue between the Ethnic Harmony Gates, there is an APEC logo landscape arrangement, and the base of the installation uses the "Auspicious Water" pattern.

According to reports, this landscape feature is 10 meters tall and 8 meters wide, equipped with over 33,000 LED bulbs, presenting a colorful display at night.

"The 'Auspicious Water' pattern evolved from traditional auspicious water pattern decorations," explained Zou Yide, the design director of this project. Water symbolizes wealth, which aligns perfectly with the economic nature of the APEC meeting. The final "Auspicious Water" pattern features auspicious water patterns connected end to end in a cyclical form, symbolizing the interconnection and interoperability of APEC economies.

This water pattern is reflected in the base of the APEC logo landscape installation, on light pole flags throughout the city, and as a background in outdoor advertising displays.

From November 4 to 11, the city's landscape lighting will be activated according to major holiday standards, with full night scene lighting.

Wu Yamei said that Beijing's landscape lighting is divided into three levels: regular days, festivals, and major festivals. During the APEC conference, this highest level of landscape lighting will also be activated, with all city nighttime lighting throughout the city turned on, on par with National Day.

Du Yi, deputy director of the Environmental Art Design Department of the Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University, pointed out that the APEC conference emphasizes the concept of frugality and energy conservation, so not too much exterior scene lighting was designed. Instead, the "internal light transmission" method was adopted, using the lighting effects emitted from inside buildings to create beautiful nighttime city scenery. Some major roads, such as certain buildings along Chang'an Avenue, will activate "internal light transmission" to increase urban lighting.

Du Yi also mentioned that the color design of the lamp post flags this time is also quite particular. For example, in the Tiananmen area, red and yellow are chosen to reflect Chinese tradition; the business district uses green and blue to reflect green ecology. The Airport Expressway displays yellow and green lamp post flags, while the Jingcheng Expressway displays red and blue lamp post flags, among others.
