Amsterdam Schiphol Airport Lighting
Some lighting design solutions were highly challenging due to their locations, while others imposed strict energy efficiency requirements. Commissioned by Schiphol Airport, Creative Lighting 3D lighting designer Michiel de Haas was responsible for the lighting design of Holland Boulevard. To meet the challenge, Michael adopted the latest Megaman® lighting technology.

Michael stated: "When I was commissioned to design the lighting scheme for the domestic terminal of Holland Boulevard at Schiphol Airport, I faced three major challenges: creating a welcoming lighting atmosphere in one of Europe's busiest airports, maximizing lighting benefits, and dealing with compact design and installation schedules." After one year of use, the latest Megaman® lighting solution in the domestic area has not only been praised by visitors and staff, but also boasts a service life of up to 40,000 hours, saving £26,780 (€30,451) in electricity costs.
The interior of the domestic terminal was specially designed by renowned Dutch designers Marcel Wanders and Studio Linse, who were responsible for custom furniture and stylish lounge areas respectively. The lounge is comfortable and inviting, featuring a sleek black piano, TV, and digital fireplace, dedicated to creating a home-away-from-home experience for weary travelers.
Michael collaborated with Schiphol Airport Technical Manager Harm de Jong to develop a lighting system compatible with the airport's daylight control system, highlighting key displays in the terminal. To precisely direct the light, Michiel adopted the Megaman® LED AR111 reflector lamp series to replace the existing recessed directional 50W quartz spotlights. He stated: "I needed a lighting solution with outstanding performance, 1-100% dimming capability, and integration with the airport's daylight control system. Megaman® LED reflector lamps are compatible with DALI and DSI systems, feature a 24° beam angle, and offer Color rendering Ra92, creating a magnificent, high-efficiency, and energy-saving lighting effect."


Megaman® utilizes efficient Thermal Conductive Highway™ technology, delivering exceptional heat dissipation, lighting performance, and lumen maintenance. Compared to traditional quartz lamps, its average life is more than 13 times longer, with an 80% reduction in energy consumption. Furthermore, the LED AR111 series produces no ultraviolet or infrared radiation or Glare, making it an ideal choice for public areas, hotels, restaurants, art galleries, or residential lighting. Additionally, designated Megaman® LED AR111 products are compatible with most 12V quartz lamp transformers, suitable for various lighting retrofit applications.
Otto Ambagtsheer, Executive Director of Consumer Business Area at Schiphol Group, told The Moodie Report: "We wanted to create a terminal with Dutch characteristics at Schiphol, and our efforts have paid off. We are committed to creating a relaxed and pleasant waiting atmosphere for passengers (average transfer time 5-7 hours). We hope to add a touch of Dutch culture to Schiphol Airport through this additional service."


We chose the Megaman® lighting solution to replace traditional quartz, metal halide, and incandescent lamps with a truly environmental protection-oriented lighting solution.
